September 2023

Happy September! We are two weeks away from Open Enrollment! Be sure to check out our articles so you are ready to go when SDPEBA's enrollment period begins on September 15th. As a reminder, you only need to contact SDPEBA if you're making any changes or adding any plans. We will have more information concerning Open Enrollment coming out over the next two months, so stay tuned!

As a note, we will be closed on September 4th in observance of Labor Day.

What's New This Month:

Important Open Enrollment dates to know!

There are a lot of different things to know about retiring, luckily SDPEBA is here to help! Since retiring looks different if you work with the City or the County we can’t just put together a one stop article for both groups. That being said, there are already great retirement guides for you to familiarize yourself with the different steps you’ll need to take.

Online Open Enrollment Resources

Based on feedback from last year’s OE there will be no Virtual Benefits this year. That being said, we know that a lot of our members rely on online content, and we are hard at work on creating dozens of online resources to help you navigate Open Enrollment and make the right choices for you! Below is a list of what we’re working on and how to find it.

Newsletters
Our OE newsletters come out on the 1st of every month. August’s newsletter can be found by going to one of the following websites:

City: https://go.sdpeba.org/August2023City
County: https://go.sdpeba.org/August2023County

Do I need a Lawyer for Power of Attorney? - Road to Retirement

No, you don’t, but there are situations where a lawyer might be able to help save you time, money, and a whole lot of headaches.

The biggest thing a lawyer can do for retirees is help them set up health directives and do their estate planning. This is fancy legalease for: setting up power of attorney and getting a will and trust sorted. Both of these processes can be done without a lawyer but are usually a lot easier with one. Since Power of Attorney is quite complicated, we are going to start there, but look forward to an article in the future breaking down wills, trusts, living wills, irrevocable trusts, and more in the future.

Open Enrollment Survey!

Since we're getting ready for Open Enrollment, we wanted to ask you some questions about OE Events. These questions are really just to gauge interest and understand what you want/expect out of events (plus they're a great place to leave us some feedback).

As always, if you're interested, just by taking this survey you can be entered into our $50 raffle!

Thanks in advance!

MetLife Legal can Cover your Parents!

Do your parents need a will? Or legal coverage? MetLife Legal might be able to help.

Last year we added the MetLife Legal Plus Parents plan, a new version of our existing legal plan that extends some of your coverage to your parents.

Note that this coverage isn’t completely the same and there are some limits, for example your parents cannot use this plan to create a trust.

The current MetLife Legal plan costs about $11 per pay period, upgrading adds $2.50 and brings the cost to $13.57 per pay period for an individual and their parents. This makes it a great deal to make sure your parents are covered for some very important things! Below is a shortlist of what coverage extends to your parents:

How SDPEBA can help during Open Enrollment

Open Enrollment is coming up this month and trust me, we know it can be exhausting. There is so much information and dates and events and websites and phone numbers and things to know and do and I think this run-on sentence has made the point! OE is a lot. But we can help.

And the easiest way I know how to help is by breaking things down into a list, so here you go.

How do Aflac Accident and Critical Illness Plans Work?

SDPEBA’s sponsored Aflac plans are unique because they’re all designed to cover different health emergencies.
