October 2022

Happy October!

With Fall officially in swing, hopefully we start to see some consistent cooler weather! We are now officially one month away from Open Enrollment! As a reminder we will be hosting a retiree help day on November 2nd. This event will be in person at the Balboa Park Club, but we will also be hosting an online version of the event at the same time. If you have any questions or need anything, please email us at info@sdpeba.org or give us a call at 888-315-8027.

For more news and information about your benefits, you can head to our website here: www.sdpeba.org!

We write a lot of articles and release a lot of PEBA talks. Some of our most popular articles are part of our “Everything to know About” series, where we break down everything about a benefit. In order to make it easier to find those, we decided to create a resource list so you can find what you’re looking for! We’re also pairing those with our “What is…” PEBA Talks, where Will Stover sits down with a specialist who breaks these plans down even farther.

Road to Retirement - Budgeting Tips

Did you know that only half of working Americans have a plan for retirement? Since this is generally the goal for… well, everyone, you’d think the number would be much higher! On average, an American spends 22 years of their life retired. That’s about ¼ of your entire life! So, its important to start saving as soon you can.

Since this is such an important issue, we’ve put together several articles about retirement planning and the things you should think about before retiring, but we figured its time that we start talking about the things you can actually do that will help you prepare for your retirement.

Have a Number in Mind
Retiring is expensive! Your first step should be to have a goal. What is the dollar value you need to retire? In our first road to retirement article, we discussed needs and wants. It might be important to have two different amounts of money in mind, a dream goal and a needs goal.

After a lengthy negotiation process, this year the changes are as follows:

Everything to know about MetLife Dental

The SDPEBA MetLife Dental plan is coming to County employees this open enrollment! We offer two comprehensive plans each designed by SDPEBA and MetLife for San Diego employees in particular. The different plans are designed with the different needs of our members in mind!

HMO vs PPO

Before you sign up for MetLife Dental’s plan you need to understand the difference between the HMO and PPO plan.

Best Health: Can you sunburn your eyes?

We all know the damaging effects the sun can have on our skin, but did you know you can get a sunburn on your eyes?

An eye sunburn, called photokeratitis, occurs when ultraviolet (UV) rays cause damage to the surface of the eyes. Exposure to UV rays can cause inflammation within the eye, specifically to the corneas.
