VSP with SDPEBA offers one of the most important things when it comes to glasses: choice. You could have a plan with extreme amounts of coverage (and VSP does have great coverage) but that wouldn’t matter at all if you could only use it somewhere that has a poor collection of frames. Which is where VSP’s network comes in.
VSP’s network is huge and gives you hundreds of options when it comes to getting frames. They also offer additional coverage for things like scratch resistant coating, UV protection, and more. And all of that basically counts for double since you can get two pairs of glasses a year with our version of the VSP plan. You can even use VSP to get your frames at Costco!
Here’s a quick rundown of what the plan offers at in-network providers:
- $0 Copay on Basic Eye Exams
- $0 Copay on Basic Eye Care Screenings
- Two separate allowances with different benefits to put toward frames or contacts.
- 1st Allowance:
- $200 towards frames or contacts
- $0 Copay on most lenses (e.g., single vision, lined bifocal, impact resistant)
- $55 Copay on Progressive lenses (standard or advanced)
- Lens Enhancement Coverage
- Free UV Protection
- Free Scratch Resistant Coating
- 30% saving on additional lens enhancements
- 2nd Allowance:
- $170 toward frames or contacts
- $0 Copay on most lenses
- 30% off lens enhancements (including progressive lenses, UV protection, etc.)
- 20% off additional Sunglasses/Glasses
Is VSP right for me?
VSP is one of our most popular benefits because it’s affordable and offers a lot of coverage.
If you need glasses, some form of vision insurance is a no brainer. Being able to get two pairs is great, since you can have one as a backup or maybe even have a pair of prescription sunglasses/specialty lenses with blue light filtering.
If you don’t need glasses, there is a world in which this plan might be good for you, and that’s if you haven’t had an eye exam in a while. You’re meant to get one every 1-2 years, so if you haven’t you really should consider it. Additionally, since you can share this plan with your dependents/spouse, it might be great for them!

How do I enroll?
To enroll in VSP, simply call 888-315-8027 during Open Enrollment. If you have any questions about enrolling, feel free to call that number or email support@SDPEBA.org. If you already have the plan, you don’t need to reenroll, only contact us to add, change, or remove your existing plans. Note: MEA employees will need to enroll in VSP via SAP during the City’s enrollment period.
How do I file a claim? How do I use the plan?
If you are using an in-network provider, you just need to make sure your optometrist knows you’re a VSP member, they will probably ask when you schedule an appointment for an exam.
If you’re going out of network, you’ll need to file a claim online. You can do that easily through VSP’s website or by clicking HERE. You might need to make an account beforehand. As a general note, benefits are reduced when using an out-of-network provider.
Once you’re on that site, follow the steps to file a claim. We’ve found it’s easier to do it online than through mail but do what works best for you!
