Sharp Saver at a Glance

  • The Sharp Saver plan is our budget option that has a deductible and less coverage than our other plans, but has our lowest monthly premium.

  • This plan uses the Premier Network, meaning there is less coverage options outside of San Diego.

  • The Sharp Saver plan has a $1,000 annual deductible. Meaning you’ll need to hit that deductible before all your benefits kick in. Note that this deductible only applies to certain services. There is a separate deductible for certain prescriptions as well.

  • This plan also has coinsurance rather than copay for many services and has a $3,500 out of pocket maximum.

  • Active City Employees can enroll in Sharp through SAP.

The Sharp Saver plan has the lowest monthly premiums, but also the most restrictive network and coverage. This plan has both a deductible and an out-of-pocket maximum, meaning it’s a good budget plan that will still offer decent coverage.

The main limiting factor for the Sharp Saver plan is the network. This version of the Sharp plan is part of the Premier Network, which only includes the Sharp Community Medical Group and Sharp Rees-Stealy group. That basically means that there is little to no coverage outside of San Diego County except in the case of emergencies.

Additionally, with this plan you’ll have to pay off your deductible before you get certain services, this deductible applies to most outpatient services. For a full list, check out the summary of benefits linked here, note that anything marked with a 7 is a service where the deductible applies.

Is the Saver Plan right for me?

If you’re looking at medical plans, you should think about what level of coverage you want. Most medical plans are offered at premium, middle, and budget tiers (think Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Budget). When it comes to Sharp Plans, the Saver plan is at the budget tier. It offers some coverage but is more restrictive about where you can go.

In order to make the best choice for you, we suggest you look at this benefit breakdown from Sharp that compares each plan and the rate sheet linked on the sidebar. Think about what sort of medical needs you have and what plan fits best into your budget.
